There would be no Nine Inch Nails or industrial rock for that matter, without the exploits of Synthpop elder statesmen, Depeche Mode, who were at one time responsible for Violator, which to this day stands as one of the most influential albums to emerge from the 90’s.
However, even their storied legacy isn’t enough to absolve them from the bloated corpse of an album they’ve just released in Sounds of the Universe.
Try as they might, Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, and Andrew Fletcher just can’t seem to escape their 80’s New Wave roots, which for better or worse leads to an albums worth of songs that attempt to push boundaries, but ultimately sound exactly like everything else they’ve previously done.
The aptly titled “Wrong” features a poorly underutilized Gahan, who repeats the chorus ad nauseam over a pulsating synth haze.
